About Us
| Vision Statement: To be the first choice of students seeking a superb education in music in a personalized setting. Programs: Brandon University School of Music offers a wide variety of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. New programs include jazz studies and composition. There are four departments in the School of Music. The Applied Department is responsible for the performance program, including jazz studies; the History & Theory Department is responsible for the honour’s program, including composition; the Joint Department of Music Education (administered jointly by the School of Music and Faculty of Education) is responsible for the concurrent and specialist music education programs; and the Graduate Music Department is responsible for the master’s programs in performance & literature and in music education. Each department has a chair – Prof. Greg Gatien is Chair of the Applied Department, Dr. Patrick Carrabré is Chair of the History & Theory Department and Dr. Sheila Scott and Dr. Patrick Carrabré are Joint Chairs of the Graduate Music Department. Undergraduate: All students registered in the Bachelor of Music degree follow a common program for the first year. At the end of the first year, the choice is made as to the specific degree to be pursued: Honours, Performance, or Music Education. In the case of Music Education, a further choice may be made at the end of the second year of study, providing that academic qualifications have been met, to enter the four year Specialist degree, B.Mus (Specialist in Music Ed.), rather than the integrated five-year B.Mus (Major in Mus. Ed.)/B.Ed.(AD). The Specialist program would require a further two-year Certification program before the graduate would be able to teach in the public school system. Bachelor of Music (Honours) The Bachelor of Music (Honours) is a flexible four-year program which enables students to specialize in music theory and composition, or in music history and literature; to take additional courses in Arts, Science or Education; or to take a variety of specialized courses in Performance or in Music Education. This program allows for a less prescriptive curriculum, while demanding the same high level of musical training as the more specialized programs. Bachelor of Music (Performance) The Bachelor of Music (Major in Performance) is a four-year program to which students with highly developed performance skills are admitted by audition after the first year of university music study. Available to students in keyboard, strings, voice, woodwinds, brass and percussion this program offers double credit in applied music and requires regular solo performance, including three credit recitals. The Applied Major is intended for students preparing for careers as professional performers. Bachelor of Music (Major in School Music) The Bachelor of Music (Major in School Music) is offered in a five-year sequence of courses leading to dual degrees awarded concurrently: B.Mus. (Major in School Music) and B.Ed. (AD). This program is designed to develop the student’s broad musical skills while preparing him or her for an elementary or secondary school teaching career. The student normally follows one of two routes: elementary/choral, or instrumental. The dual degrees qualify the recipient for a Class 5 Permanent Professional Teacher’s Certificate from the Manitoba Education and Training. Bachelor of Music (Specialist in School Music) The Bachelor of Music (Specialist in School Music) is a four-year program available to students demonstrating exceptional academic achievement (3.0 GPA in their first two years of study) and desiring a more extensive musical background. This degree, with the addition of a two-year B.Ed. certification program, qualifies the student for a Class 6 Permanent Professional Teacher’s Certificate from the Manitoba Education and Training. |
